A lot of people like to jump into Marinas and the seas and lakes in their areas. however, Although this may appear safe, there is a lot of hidden dangers under the surface that you may not be aware of. The most significant danger is COLD WATER SHOCK which can cause involuntary gasping, rapid breathing and panic leading to rapid drowning even on hot summer days. WATER TYPE: Rivers - Hidden debris - Submerged branches rocks and rubbish can cause severe injuries or trap you underwater. Currents and Weirs - Fast flowing currents and strong undercurrents (stoppers) around weirs can effortlessly pull you under. Variable Depths - Riverbeds are constantly shifting, creating sudden deep drop-offs and shallow areas. LAKES - Thermal Stratifications - The sun warms the surface water, but deep water can be freezing, increasing your risk of cold water shock and muscle cramps when diving. Underwater Obstacles - Submerged tree stumps, reeds and sudden ledges can disorient you and cause entanglement. THE SEA Rip Currents - Powerful channels of water flowing away from the shore can quickly sweep you out to sea. Tides and Waves - Tidal changes alter water depths drastically and can create dangerous breaking waves. Maritime traffic - Swimmers are often difficult for boaters to spot in open coastal water. Never JUMP in always wade in slowly to allow your body to acclimatise to the temperature and avoid cold water shock, check the DEPTH never jump in unless you are sure the water is deep enough and clear of obstructions. always swim with a friend on the shore to know where you are look for lifeguards - try and use an area where there are designated lifeguards. float to live - dont panic try and keep calm. |
